Do keywords on my resume really matter?

Updated: Jun 14, 2020

Short answer: Yes, they do! Keywords are the best way to customize your resume for a specific job. We strongly recommend using keywords. In this blog post, we provide more information and share a free online tool to identify keywords.

For every job opening you might apply to, a recruiter may receive between 10-1000 resumes, and sometimes, even more, depending on the size of the company. To reduce the time spent in reviewing and shortlisting resumes, companies use an Applicant Tracking System (ATS).

An ATS is a software that stores resumes, job openings, and allows a recruiter to manage the recruiting process. Often, in companies that have high volumes of resumes, the ATS also filters out candidates whose resumes lack the relevant keywords that the job opening has.

To prevent yourself from getting filtered out by the ATS, and to ensure your resume is noticed by the recruiter, check keywords from the job description and add them to your resume. Remember you should do this for every job you apply to!

Here’s a free tool that helps you identify relevant keywords with just a few clicks.
